  • Trying to decide between pursuing PA or MD. What is the difference in depth of education between the two professions? For example, if both a med student and a PA student were studying hypothyroidism, to what extent would the PA and MD education be the same? In what ways would the education differ?

  • Hi Dr. Cellini and your lovely PA wife. I actually see a PA myself and one of my dearest friends is a PA and teaches here in California at LLUMC. I am a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwife and currently in my Doctoral program. Here in California Physician Assistants cannot deliver babies-it is very sad b/c I have had many PA students and they would love too. Are either of you aware of which states allow it? Also the autonomy is different here as well. Peace to both you :)

  • Dr. Cellinni Just curious does your wife do differential diagnosis or has she worked with dead bodies in med school as you obviously did? :) Ahh. Just curious. I seem to have a APRN as they are in W.Va. or NPs that is really screwing me up and, maybe she doesn't know it or care. I walked in in remission and she is trying to take me apart and fix me. I am not sure what her goal is but we will have a talk. Anyway. I know PAs follow the path of medicine and Nurses, well, nursing. Butt hey seem to think they're doctors. The one I see knows nothing of my history, nor pharmacology, nor does she seem to consult MDs before doing something. MDs or DOs fix, cure, and in mental health, put into remission mental illnesses. Nurses help keep the patient in remission and "nurse" them. not take apart and try to fix again. "The book" not clinical knowledge says people should have 60 mg max does of buspirone. I was taking 90 mg 30 tid. Oh that's too much she said and put me on 30 mg bid. And had already cut my klonopin. I ended up having 2 seizures and was hospitalized. As to the buspirone she thinks it's withdraw I think it's symtomology returning. But you only alter one med at a time. Or you won't know anything. Anyway, what is your specialty ? Are you a radiologist or hospitalist?

  • I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant: I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow. I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug. I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery. I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God. I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick. I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure. I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm. If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help. The real question is, did u both take the oath??

  • Do you feel the medical industry in the US is leaning more towards using PA's, as opposed to doctors, at least for routine cases as a way of pushing more patients through their practices on a daily basis. When I was younger there were no PA's. You saw a doctor no matter what the issue was.

  • So I have an opportunity to go to community college to get my nursing degree. In those two years will cost $20,000. And then the hospital I live by says they will pay for my schooling to finish and get my bachelors. And then after I get my bachelors, I would like to attend college near me to get my physician assistant degree. In total I will be in 60k in debt. Should I got for it?

  • This is a great video. I am 80. My PA has been able to take care of 80 to 90 percent of my healthcare issues. He is more accessible than my doctor and, equally important, he seems to have more time to spend with me. He has caught a couple of things that my doctor overlooked. This country should expand the PA program(s). It is one way to increase the number of healthcare providers so as to help ensure that everyone in the U.S. has access to affordable healthcare. Too often people of my generation, in particular, assume that they have to run to the doctor for everything under the Sun. Nope. PA's and nurse practitioners can deal with many if not the majority of healthcare issues.

  • With all your respect, if a PA can manage, diagnose, treat, assist and "do everything a physician do" over a patient then you are a physician. What are the limitation that would not be salaries and medical mal practice? Thanks
