F1’s 2021 rule changes: 10 things you need to know

Formula 1 has finally revealed its major rule changes for 2021, and there is plenty of ground to cover. In this video Jake Boxall-Legge guides you through all the key changes that are coming as part of the overhaul, ranging from technical and sporting matters, to F1’s first official cost cap

  • Actually very surprised by the return of wheel covers - iirc, they stopped them simply because if they jammed or broke the tyre would often come off, which was potentially dangerous....

  • So basically they went from total dumb to retarded over 9000. Bring back the old cars and old tires from 2004. Make the cars all the same and then its a fair fight for everyone and may the best driver win. And i bet ya its gonna be a whole different story and racing would be interesting again

  • I would like to see the engines changed to 1.5 - 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbos to help develop road cars. As for the rules, does it really matter anymore. There have been so many rule changes that many fans don't care anymore. Just race and I'll cheer for Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Haas. After all, can one really compare records and wins, points, etc with all of the seasonal changes?? Just race...

  • Everyone wants to tighten the field. Easy way to do that. Use DRS backwards. In other words, DRS may only be used if your car is more than one second behind the car ahead. That way the back markers and mid field cars tighten up with the leaders but are not allowed a free pass as it is now. Let's get back to racing not just switching the lead.

  • I believe, since they have been developing this car for a large part using CFD simulations, they should be able to do simulations also of the possibility to follow other cars closely. So if this, as they claim will be possible, the first thing that should disappear is the Super Mario Cart DIFFUSOR as this will kill close racing because it gives the driver from behind a clear and simple UNFAIR ADVANTAGE.

  • Somehow this brand is still alive when they abandoned V10s , i expected massive lose .. Its been at least 8 years i stopped watching this stuff. Because it's not about racing anymore, its some futuristic wheel stuff.. In old times it was fun the watch Montoya - Schumi - Hakinen - Alonso - Raikonen - Barichello - Coulthard - webber -button - massa beautiful engine sounds, no stupid restrictions, i was fan of Ferrari but i respected other teams unique stuff like Mercedes : Air tubes letting them 10 km + extra speed in straight path..

  • F1 has degenerated into a more or less generic, anodyne joke. It’s where innovation went to die. Generic trays? Wings? How about a standard ‘control’ engine and electronics package? At least when almost everyone was running a DFV and Hewland, there were plenty of innovative cars - and engines for those who chose to distinguish themselves that way. I’m not sure why any manufacturers are still involved, given there’s very little left to manufacture by which they can distinguish themselves. It’s like Moto2 now. Where is the technical competition? Increasingly the main differences between competing cars is the competition for sponsorship - which is fair enough. It’s become a graphic design competition. The only real variable left now is the drivers, and I don’t want to take anything away from what they’re doing - but that’s not why I used to follow F1.

  • You know what folks would really watch? Start a 'Retro F1' Series with a '60's Class, a '70's Class and an 80's Class. The cars MUST use the tech of their respective time period and abide by the rules of that given era. Aside from certain new safety equipment, we'd get to see the glory cars of old thumping and screaming again, and there's no way they'd be as expensive as the rolling bank vaults of computer technology we have today. Hell, who wouldn't LOVE to see a 'new' 'Jim Clark style 67 Lotus 49, a Niki Lauda '76 Ferrari 312T2 or an Ayrton Senna '88 Honda RA168E tearing around the tracks of Europe? And why stop there, bring back Imola, Watkins Glen, Adelaide and Brands Hatch! It would simply wipe modern F1 off the map.......

  • well... 2021 would seem like a nice year, but still all cars will be the same with some little changes... i miss the 70s even if i wasn't even born yet why not instead take all the stupidly restrictive creativity regulations and just put a dam cost cap for every component of the car both in r & d and manufacturing like (in arbitrary numbers) 5k for the front wing, 10k for suspension, 20k for engine, etc, let the teams be creative and let innovation rule the racing, not your dam politics the only "restrictive" set of rules i could imagine are for "pushing" the teams to develop more environmentally friendly engines, power trains, manufacturing, etc by encouraging in some way the use of biofuels and electric power plants

  • Most of the stuff people are complaining about might be true, but if it creates more interesting races couldn't that outweigh the negatives? Some great drivers getting poor results because budgets aren't big enough. The cars are vastly different in performance. I just hope the first race of the 2021 season is extremely exciting and we see some struggling talents keeping up with the big boys 🤷‍♂️
