Monogamy, explained

Here it is! Episode 1 of our new show on Netflix: Explained. There's two more at right now & new episodes every Wednesday.

In 2016, more than 2.2 million couples got married in America, but more than 800,000 got divorced. Cheating and breakups cause grief and heartache every day. Yet some historians and evolutionary biologists say monogamy is a relatively new, self-imposed system. Their evidence suggests humans lived without it for more than 250,000 years. And we only started marrying for love in the 1700s.
So if monogamy is so hard, why do most of us, all around the world, make it a central goal of our lives?
Vox tackled this question in the first episode of our new show with Netflix, Explained, which premieres today! We’ll have new episodes every Wednesday, on topics ranging from monogamy to gene editing to the racial wealth gap to K-pop and more. If you like our videos, then you’ll love this show; it’s our most ambitious video project to date.

    • @Tech Freak my point is that they don't select based on merit but whether or not you're jewish or some other so called minority. What do you think we would find if we looked at the demographic breakdown of rejection letters? What percent do you think would be jewish? Hmm i'm willing to wager jews are rejected at a lesser rate than any other

  • Smartness is important in marriage and in a relationship and I’m glad that cyberhackinggenius helped cloned my husband’s phone. I got access to all his dealings both on phone and social media without touching his phone. All I did was share my husband’s phone number with Cyberhackinggenius and I was able to read both his new and deleted messages from my phone without having to touch his phone. My husband was a cheating Narcissist and I’m glad to find out all his secrets and infidelity with the help of cyberhackinggenius. I’m here in UK and able to access my husband’s phone messages with a link on my phone even while he was away in Canada cheating on me. I got to discover that my husband who is legally married to me here in UK is also recently married to another woman in Canada and I’m finally going through a divorce with lots of evidence against him. I read all deleted and recent chats on his Whatsapp, Twitter,Facebook,Instagram messages and Skype. You can contact this great hacker “Gavin” via Gmail (cyberhackinggenius) or text and speak to him directly on his phone and WhatsApp : +19256795146 and I hope you find peace with your heart after finding the truth.

  • How could they talk about monogamy and not mention STD's

    Nicoli XavierNicoli XavierHace 17 días
  • @Vox: You should clarify if the stated # of marriages and divorces in 2016 are for the same couple. It sounds too high. Even though 800k got divorced, some or most of them could be from marriages before 2016! It's very easy to mislead people with data.

  • Actually, people married by love before 17 the century. Most of commoners, actually. And there's a difference between polygamy and promiscuity. Polygamy is a marriage of a man with several women. Promiscuity is a way to end of civilized society.

  • In hunter gatherer times it didn't matter if the child wasn't yours because it would definitely have been fathered by another man in that pack and they all raised the children, men, women, elderly people, older children, they all played their parts in hunting, gathering & child rearing, its society that made monogamy

    • Well now we live in very close, competitive societies. No one is going around helping everyone pay theirs bills. There is 8 billion of us. Monogamy is the safest bet in a world/population this large. So, every child can definitely be looked after. Society did create monogamy but it wasn't for no reason.

    Keirra ĘwaKeirra ĘwaHace 3 meses
    • @Jade Williams Thats exactly what I'm saying.

      Keirra ĘwaKeirra ĘwaHace 29 días
    • Well monogamy definitely helps prevent STDs. Sleeping with one person (and if they are only sleeping with you) then you won't get a std. But if you sleep with multiple people your risks go up. A huge pro to monogamy is that as our population got bigger, we moved into closer proximity, you would avoid STDs by only having one partner.

      Jade WilliamsJade WilliamsHace un mes
  • God ordained marriage and the family, but this video unintentionally tries to explain away God.. which would make marriage obsolete anyway. "Let no one separate what God has joined together". This "explained'" series is all about "explaining" life without a Creator. Our DNA was designed and created, just like every other creature on earth. We all have DNA and similarities. I believe it's because we were all painted by the same artist. Not "all creatures evolved from a single cell".. How tragic it would be to wake up in the face of your Creator in the end, after spending your whole life pretending there never was one.

  • It's very nice it's called "Explained" when all they do is build up an argument against Monogamy. How can you call it scientific? Where's the other side? What about those people who chose to stay and marry their partner out of love and they both seee marriage as not a "rule" (oh my lord) but a celebration of their relationship. And what if they actually enjoy it? Why can't being with one person be satisfying? I mean if they both feel that their relationship is only complete if they are with more than one person fair enough, but we should not discredit those who actually want to stay with one partner.

    • Cult: a person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society. Since non-monogamy is the smaller community by far it'd be more logical to call that a cult, but I don't believe either one is a cult.
